Why the cycle of fourths

Most jazz tunes move down in fourths — ii to V, V to I, iii to vi to ii to V — so running a lick around the cycle drills it through every functional resolution you'll meet on a gig. That's what a player means by "knowing it in all keys."

Why chromatic

Chromatic motion strips the harmony down to motor control: same shape, twelve fingerings, no shortcuts. Slower than fourths feels — but it forces the line into keys your ear wouldn't naturally migrate to.

How to use this

Start at 2 bars per chord, 100 bpm. Loop a single device — say change-running on maj7 — until each key feels equal. Then halve the bars. Then raise the tempo. That's the practice loop the masters built their vocabulary on.
